Gorge Yourself on Nature

Nestled in Hiroshima Prefecture between Tojo and Jinsekikogen towns, Taishakukyo Gorge is the 18km long valley found in the Chugoku Mountains.

The main attraction of the Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku National Park, Taishaku Gorge is listed as a national place of scenic beauty, complete with the naturally occurring Onbashi Bridge – a 90-metre long rock bridge 40 metres high created by mountain rivers eroding through limestone.

Travellers can follow rapids through the gorge, explore the 8-metre-high limestone Hakuundo Cave, and even walk the perimeter of the dark blue Lake Shinryu-ko. Or, if you're feeling extra adventurous, try travelling by boat or kayak to explore this marvel that was formed over 100 years ago after the Taishaku River was dammed.

And, once you're tired out explore the natural wonders on offer at Taishakukyo Gorge, why not venture into Tojo to relax in the traditional sweet shops, sake breweries and restaurants dotted all over the classic Japanese town.
